Papaya Disease & Pest Guide: PRSV, Mealybug & Foot Rot

Three problems account for most of the papaya yield and quality losses we hear about across Khandesh: Papaya Ringspot Virus (PRSV), papaya mealybug, and Phytophthora foot rot. None of them are unique to any one nursery's planting material — but knowing what to watch for and acting early makes the difference between a manageable outbreak and a lost block.

1. Papaya Ringspot Virus (PRSV)

PRSV is transmitted by aphids in a non-persistent manner — the aphid doesn't need to feed for long, just probe an infected leaf and then move to a healthy plant. Infected plants show mosaic mottling and distortion on younger leaves, water-soaked ring-shaped spots on the fruit surface, and a general decline in vigor and fruit quality over time.

Why tissue culture doesn't make this one go away:unlike seed-borne issues, PRSV spreads in the field via aphid vectors regardless of how the planting material was propagated. Prevention

  • Control aphid populations early with recommended insecticides or reflective mulch, which disrupts aphid landing behavior.
  • Rogue out and destroy plants showing early mosaic symptoms before they become a source of further spread.
  • Avoid siting new papaya blocks immediately next to heavily aphid-infested fields where possible.
  • Yellow sticky traps at field margins help monitor aphid pressure before it peaks.

2. Papaya Mealybug (Paracoccus marginatus)

A sap-sucking insect that clusters as white, cottony masses on stems, leaf undersides and developing fruit. Heavy infestations stunt growth, disfigure fruit surfaces, and the honeydew mealybugs secrete promotes sooty mold that further reduces photosynthesis and marketability.

Prevention

  • Regular field scouting — mealybug colonies are easiest to control when caught at low density, before they spread up the plant.
  • Biological control with the parasitoid wasp Acerophagus papayae has been widely effective against papaya mealybug in Indian conditions; check with your local agriculture department for availability.
  • Avoid excess nitrogen fertigation — soft, lush growth is more attractive to mealybugs.
  • Remove volunteer papaya and other host weeds near the field edge that can carry mealybug between seasons.

3. Phytophthora Foot Rot

Caused by the soil-borne fungus Phytophthora palmivora, foot rot shows up as a water-soaked, dark lesion at the base of the stem that girdles and eventually collapses the plant. It's strongly favored by waterlogging and poor drainage — a real risk on Khandesh's black cotton soils during heavy monsoon spells.

Prevention

  • Plant on raised beds or mounds rather than flat ground, especially on black cotton soils that hold water — this is one of the first things our agronomy team checks when reviewing a new field.
  • Ensure field drainage channels are clear before the monsoon, not after waterlogging starts.
  • Avoid injuring the stem base during weeding or intercultural operations — wounds are an entry point for the fungus.
  • Remove and destroy affected plants promptly to limit soil-borne inoculum buildup.
