G9 Banana Planting Guide: Spacing, Pit Size & Irrigation Schedule

Correct spacing and a consistent irrigation schedule matter as much as plant quality for getting a uniform G9 banana harvest. This guide covers pit preparation, spacing options for different planting densities, and a stage-wise drip irrigation schedule suited to Khandesh's black cotton soils.

Pit Preparation

  • Dig pits roughly 45cm x 45cm x 45cm, at least 2–3 weeks before planting.
  • Backfill with topsoil mixed with well-decomposed farmyard manure (10–15 kg per pit) and a small dose of single super phosphate, then let it settle before planting.
  • Ensure the field has working drainage — banana roots are highly sensitive to waterlogging.

Choosing Your Spacing

Spacing is a trade-off between plants-per-acre and bunch size/air circulation. Two common approaches for G9:

First-time growers, or fields with a history of leaf spot pressure, are usually better off with the wider spacing until you have a season of experience managing the crop.

Planting

  • Plant tissue culture plantlets at the same depth they were growing in the nursery bag — planting too deep delays establishment.
  • Firm the soil around the base and irrigate immediately after planting.
  • Avoid planting in the peak of the pre-monsoon heat where possible; early monsoon or post-monsoon planting windows generally see better establishment.

Drip Irrigation Schedule

The figures below are a general starting point for drip-irrigated G9 banana on medium-textured soil — adjust for your specific soil type, spacing and local evaporation rates, ideally after a soil/water test.
