TR4 Banana Disease: A New, More Dangerous Threat — What Khandesh Farmers Should Know

A disease that has been a source of growing concern across banana-growing regions worldwide for the past few years has now been confirmed, according to recent research reports, in India's major banana belts — Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. It is called Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense Tropical Race 4 (TR4) — a far more aggressive strain of the same fungus that causes Panama wilt.
Why TR4 Is Such a Big Deal
Most banana cultivation across Khandesh and Maharashtra — including what we supply — is the G9 / Grand Naine variety, part of the Cavendish group. Until now, this variety's biggest advantage was its resistance to the older Race 1 strain of Panama wilt. TR4 breaks that rule: G9 and virtually every other Cavendish variety are susceptible to it. In other words, a disease farmers had learned to stop worrying about is now the one to watch most closely.
How To Recognize It and How It Spreads
Symptoms look like classic Panama wilt — older leaves yellowing from the margins, drooping, and a pseudostem that shows brown-black vascular discoloration when cut. The difference isn't in the symptoms; it's in severity and how the disease travels:
- The fungus survives dormant in soil for years — some studies report over a decade.
- It moves easily between fields through contaminated soil, irrigation water, tools, or vehicle tyres.
- Suckers taken from an infected mother plant can carry the fungus even when they look healthy from the outside.
- Once established in a field, there is no practical cure — only management.
What You Can Do As a Farmer
No one can guarantee TR4 will never reach your field, but there are practices that meaningfully cut the risk:
- Check the source of your planting material. Starting with certified tissue culture (meristem-propagated) plants that are lab-verified disease-free is the single biggest factor you control — infected suckers are the most common way TR4 enters a new field. - Follow field biosecurity.Don't bring in soil, water or tools directly from another farm, disinfect tools regularly, and clean footwear and vehicle tyres before entering the field.
- Keep drainage in order. Waterlogging stresses roots and raises infection risk.
- Spot suspect plants early and isolate them. The moment symptoms appear, stop moving planting material out of that area and contact your local Krishi Vigyan Kendra or planting material supplier.
How the Industry Is Responding
This isn't only cause for concern — research and industry are actively responding. In March 2026, ICAR-National Research Centre for Banana (Tiruchirapalli) signed an agreement with Jalgaon-based Jain Irrigation Systems to produce tissue culture plantlets of two new banana varieties, Kaveri Vaman and Kaveri Puvan. Alongside this, scientific research on bio-immunized tissue culture techniques has also been published recently. That points to more resistant, lab-verified varieties and technology reaching farmers over the next few years.
Until then, the most practical step is caution from the moment of planting — a clean start is always cheaper and easier than managing an outbreak after the disease is already in the field.
